sprou-green-earthtSprouts are one of nature’s most nutritious foods, full of energy and nutrition. All of the energy and the blueprint of a mature plant are contained in its seed, along with all the potential of its future being as well as the ancestry of its lineage. Sprouting seeds is one of the easiest and quickest ways to create live foods for use in a raw food, vegan diet.

Better Sprouting with Effective Microorganisms

While sprouts are not very difficult to grow, there are certain issues to be dealt with to insure that they are produced successfully, with due consideration for safety and optimum quality. The Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia, Arizona is producing sprouts using Effective Microorganisms.

They use the following methods for producing wheat grass, buckwheat lettuce and sunflower sprouts:

Methods:

1st soak: 20 minutes in a weak hydrogen peroxide solution (1-2 tbsp. 2% hydrogen peroxide per 2 quarts of water and seeds. This is to clean the seeds thoroughly of any surface dirt, dust and spores that might contaminate the sprouting seeds.

2nd soak: 20 minutes in a 1:100 dilution of EM-1® in water. This helps provide a probiotic environment for the sprouting seeds to ward off re-contamination by spores.

3rd soak: 8-10 hrs., or overnight in pure, clean water. We recommend using EM-X® Ceramics to help structure the soaking water for optimum results.

After soaking, trays are prepared by punching holes for good drainage (if necessary), and lining the tray with a suitable screen material, such as cheesecloth. A very thin layer of peat moss (1/2 inch or less) is placed in the bottom of the tray, and the soaked seeds are layered on top of the peat moss to the depth of one seed spread evenly over the surface of the tray. A standard 10 by 20 inch tray will hold 1.5 to 2 cups of seeds. The filled trays are given a gentle spray of water to help settle the seeds before being placed in the rack to start the germination process. A dark cover is placed over the sprouts, which is typically just another empty tray. Once the sprouts reach the top of the covering tray, it is removed and the sprouts are exposed to sunlight to green up.

Harvesting:

Buckwheat and sunflower sprouts will benefit from a rinse with a strong spray of water to knock off the hulls (seed coats) that still cling to some of the sprouts. Then, the sprouts can be harvested using a scissors or sharp knife. A final rinse in cold water will help make them nice and crisp for eating. To enhance flavor and quality and reduce spoilage, a few drops of EM-X® can be added to the final rinse/soak water, and/or EM-X® Ceramics can be used to structure the water. For wheat sprouts, a light spray with EM-X® water or EM-X® Ceramics structured water before harvesting will enhance the anti-oxidants in the wheat grass juice.

water-treatment-effective-microorganismsEM America provides clients with specifically targeted applications of EM Technology® that are able to dramatically reduce odors caused by putrefied wastes. The picture on the right shows the walls of a lift station that once were black and now look like new cement. This dramatic change was achieved simply through the application of EM-1® Waste Treatment. This effect happens throughout the entire collection system when EM Technology® is properly applied in the collection system. Timing, flow rates, system design, and management are all considered in developing an application program for a  wastewatertreatment plant and collection system (sewer).

EM-1® Waste Treatment has a unique ability to stabilize complex proteins through a shift from anaerobic putrefaction cycles to a fermentative cycle. Hair and plastics can play havoc with the balancing of an anaerobic digester by creating over-thickening of the scum layer. Hair is primarily composed of complex proteins, which have been historically difficult to stabilize to a point at which the biological breakdown will occur in a timely manner. EM-1® Waste Treatment will assist by accelerating protein stabilization.

EM-1® Waste Treatment is applied at various stages in the treatment process for optimum results. The application site and dosage amounts are dependent on the type of treatment system, the age of the system, and the goals of the parties involved. Application rates can vary from 1: 1000 to 1: 40,000. The average rate into a treatment system is around 1: 10,000 (based on daily flow). The EM-1® is activated and injected at various points throughout the collection system on a steady flow.

The microbes in EM-1® Waste Treatment secrete  beneficial substances such as organic acids,  enzymes and antioxidants (chelated minerals and vitamins) when in contact with  organic matter. In wastewater applications, EM-1® assists in shifting conditions from putrefactive to non-putrefactive. This unique ability enables EM-1® to transition the wastewater collection system into a pretreatment system, thereby lowering the loading demand on wastewater treatment  plants. Essentially, consistent applications of EM Technology® into the collection system will increase the capacity of the treatment plant, decrease the operation costs, and improve the efficiency of the entire system.

Since every treatment system is in itself a separate ecosystem, EM America will custom-design each application for a wastewater treatment system after an assessment of the entire system.

em1logo75px (1)A  zoo is a dynamic operation. Zoo’s incorporate various types of animals, drinking water supplies, wastewater, water recycling systems, turf, flowers, trees, solid wastes, restaurants, sanitation facilities, and veterinary clinics.

EM-1® offers applications for all facets of these operations.

  • Animal exhibits can be washed down with EM-1® for waste treatment, odor control, and fly control.
  • Water exhibits require recycling systems to keep levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) up, water clarity, lower sludge
  • and BOD, etc.
  • Keep wastes and costs of recharge water down.
  • Larger animals’ wastes are often composted and utilized on site as fertilizer
  • and mulch for application to the grounds.

The most successful zoo in the United States using Effective Microorganisms is the Honolulu Zoo in Hawaii. The zoo has been using EM-1® in their exhibits for several years. Specifics for all the applications above are available in different sections of this web site and can easily be incorporated into any zoo’s maintenance program.

enviromental_composting (1)Using EM Technology® (EM-1® Waste Treatment) can help reduce composting turning costs by as much as 80% and prevent anaerobic, odor-causing decay. The key to efficient composting is to have healthy decomposition constantly occurring throughout the pile.  In all conditions, including low oxygen and anaerobic environments, EM-1® Waste Treatment facilitates healthy decomposition and increased production of stable organic matter particles (humus). Feed stocks treated with EM-1® Waste Treatment quickly develop structure and a more fluffy texture allowing oxygen to penetrate into the pile. Anaerobic pockets become aerated and the overall quality of the product is improved while reducing management time and cost. Microbial density and diversity improvements and increased nitrogen availability in composts treated with EM-1® Waste Treatment is discussed below.

Effective Microorgansisms Composting in Windrows, No Fly, Odor, or Leachate Problems.

Composting is an environmentally conscious method of creating a valuable product out of organic wastes. At present, the fundamental challenge composting facilities face is in properly aerating the piles. Oxygen starts to become limiting in compost piles within minutes of turning and the rising diesel and equipment costs makes turning compost the main management input. Frequent turning also exacerbates odor and dust issues, releasing ammonium and methane gases into the air and in the process losing valuable nutrients and organic mass. This makes for angry neighbors, numerous flies, and a potentially disease inducing finished product.

EM-1® Waste Treatment is compatible with numerous types of commercial composting systems (including in vessel systems), and can be used to effectively treat green waste, livestock waste, food waste, and most other agricultural-industrial wastes that will be composted. EM-1® Waste Treatment can also be used at transfer stations for safe and effective odor control.

A trial was set up to examine the benefits of EM-1® Waste Treatment for a commercial aerobic windrow green waste compost operation in Northern California that uses a method of composting that requires a tremendous amount of turning.

The Finished Compost is Consistent and High Quality

Lab analysis provided results that suggest the EM-1® Waste Treatment compost was significantly more mature and stable than the control. The EM-1® Waste Treatment compost had a C:N (Carbon to Nitrogen) ratio of 15:1 to a 18:1 C:N ratio for the untreated compost (control). Furthermore, the compost treated with EM-1® Waste Treatment contained 5 times more nitrate than the control. The NO2:NH3 ratio for the compost treated with EM-1® Waste Treatment was 16:1 compared to 3:1 for the control. The compost treated with EM-1® Waste Treatment more intensely cycled carbon to nitrogen and more efficiently converted organic nitrogen into nitrate. Microbial analysis confirmed and quantified the visible increase in microbial activity. The heterotrophic, actinomycetes, and pseudomonad groups had significantly greater populations in the compost treated with EM-1® Waste Treatment. The microbial diversity index for the EM-1® Waste Treatment compost was also greater than the control.

BBC Labs Microbial Analysis Report Summary:

Heterotrophic group EM-1® Waste Treatment Control 120 Million 36 Million
Actinomycetes group EM-1® Waste Treatment Control 16 Million2 Million
Pseudomonad group EM-1® Waste Treatment Control 6.5 Million0.45 Million
Anaerobic group EM-1® Waste Treatment Control 9.4 Million 13 Million

The following application recommendation are guidelines to producing high quality compost with less intensive management. Contact EM America for customer EM-1® Waste Treatment composting programs that will meet your goals.

Procedures:

  1.  Apply EM-1® Waste Treatment as soon as the material is consolidated (or windrowed) and preferably before the material has become thermophillic (temperatures above 120 degrees F).
  2. These recommended rates of EM-1® Waste Treatment application are guidelines and may need to be adjusted for site-specific conditions and unique feedstocks. Activated EM-1® Waste Treatment should be used for all applications due to cost savings. Consult with EM America for specific commercial composting Activation instructions.
Feedstock EM-1® Waste Treatment Application Rate per ton Application Timing
100% Green Waste 1 gal. Activated EM-1® Waste Treatment Day 1
50% Green Waste/50% Food waste or other agricultural waste (i.e. livestock waste) 2 gal. Activated EM-1® Waste Treatment Day 1 (1 gal.) and Day 14 (1 gal.)
  3. Add EM-1® Waste Treatment to the water used to hydrate the feedstock. Try to minimize runoff. The material should then be turned for an even EM-1® Waste Treatment application.  Dilution of EM-1® Waste Treatment will vary depending on total water volume needed to attain proper moisture.
  4. Turn (aerate) the compost once a month until maturity.
  5. EM-1® Waste Treatment can be applied at a low rate (1 liter/ton) when compost is mature to further increase microbial density and compost quality.

landfill-odor-controlEM Technology® has been used around the world in the treatment of solid waste landfills. The motto of “acting locally” can be taken quite literally if we were all to incorporate the use of Effective Microorganisms™ at home by treating all of our food and green wastes “locally”. Solid wastes are inevitable in today’s society. How we manage the wastes is really the problem, not having them. Throwing items that have some usable value is not management, but waste. Incineration of wastes leads to other problems with air pollution and also relies heavily on fuels to produce high heat for the process to work properly. Materials that go into landfills include, but are not limited to, green wastes, food wastes, metals, plastics, construction debris, etc.

Landfills are maintained under strict regulations that require daily covers, dust control, odor control, and leachate management for air and groundwater protection. Landfill managers are concerned with these factors and compaction rates as well. Landfill gases are required to be captured as they could be explosive and are often flared because they are loaded with impurities that prevent them from being efficient energy sources. Increasing compaction rates and cleaning the gases with Effective Microorganisms™ so they can be used could save taxpayers millions of dollars per month on a national level.

Odor and Dust Control:

Using EM-1® in the daily cover and in the water trucks that are used to control dust, odor, and increase compaction rates, are simple ways to better-manage a landfill. An added benefit is that EM-1® Waste Treatment will eliminate odor on contact, making for better neighbor relations and better working conditions for employees. Hydrogen sulfide has been implicated in breathing problems in a study in Ohio. Eliminating H2S, as EM-1® has been proven to do in wastewater treatment, can also connect EM-1® Waste Treatment with worker safety.

Leachate and Landfill Gases:

H2S is a contaminant to the landfill gas. Removing it will clean the gas and make it burn more efficiently. Some landfills, depending on the amount of organic materials that are added to them, will produce varying amounts of methane gas and leachate. Many landfill operations that aggressively separate organic matter going into the landfill will not produce a significant amount of methane, yet they are still required to install gas collection systems. As has been demonstrated with EM-1® applications in several countries, there is the possibility of eliminating the production of methane gas in the first place, eliminating the need for the expensive gas collection system. The eventual goal is to see that large amounts of EM-1® are added to the leachate and the incoming wastes to detoxify the leachate, eliminating the worries of groundwater contamination. On this level more research needs to be done, however, based on research in other areas of waste treatment, there is a high probability of achieving these goals.

Application Rates:

In a 5,000-gallon water truck, 100 gallons of Effective Microorganisms™ EM-1® are added to control odor and increase compaction rates (as was done at the Tangerine landfill in the photo above). The beneficial microbes in the EM-1® will stop pathogenic microbial growth (as has been laboratory tested) and set the growing conditions for other beneficial microbes in the landfill which will increase the decomposition of the organic matter in the landfill. At this ratio, the methanogen groups of microbes will not be able to grow and methane gas will not be produced.

Daily cover made of organic material can be mixed with EM-1® at a rate of 1.5 gallons per ton of material.

With operations this large, Activated EM-1® is used with the above ratios.

Effective Microorganisms™ can be applied through bioreactors as well. The application ratio will be 1 part Activated EM-1® to 1,000 gallons of water.

EM-1® Micriboal Inoculant has quickly become an essential tool in sustainable and organic management of healthy turf. EM-1® has been utilized by the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) division of the Park and Recreation Department of the City of San Francisco for the past 4 years to improve turf quality and without the use of dangerous fungicides and pesticides. EM-1® is a necessary technology for the golf course industry to help meet new city and state government mandates that require up to an 80% reduction of most fungicides and pesticides. The public is now demanding turf management that does not compromise the environment or our health. EM-1® represents a viable solution, and is a safe and effective alternative for residential lawns, city parks, schools, and golf courses.

EM-1® supplies a beneficial micro-ecology that improves soil structure, drainage, and water retention of the soil’s rhizosphere (root zone). EM-1® will significantly improve turf quality during the months of extreme heat and moisture when disease pressure is greatest.

Amount of Turf Stress Application frequency Application Rate (EM-1®:Water) Hose-end sprayer setting
Low Once a month 1:100 1-1.5oz./gallon
High Once a week 1:50 2-3oz./gallon

Recommendations for a successful EM-1® lawn:

  • Apply the EM-1® with a hose-end sprayer, backpack sprayer, or inject EM-1® into the irrigation system. EM-1® can be applied once a week during periods of extreme drought or rain and once a month for maintaining optimal turf quality and health.
  • Use organic fertilizers with EM-1®. During cool weather apply EM-1® with liquid kelp. In the fall or spring Effective Microorganisms can be applied with a liquid fish emulsion.
  • Use a “mulching mower” to chop and redeposit the grass clipping. Spray EM-1® onto the turf after mowing. This enables the clippings to rapidly breakdown into stable organic matter for the soil. Organic matter particles provides a home for EM-1® to establish in the soil.

For further information regarding specific turf problems or EM-1®/ fertilizer turf programs consult EM America’s technical services.

If there is one thing that is ALWAYS consistent with EM-1®, it is its ability to control odors. The application rate varies according to how bad the odor is and what is being treated. As a rule of thumb, we generally will start with a 100:1 application of water to EM-1®. If this rate was not able to control the odor, another application may be necessary.

Some examples of what odors can be easily eliminated are:

  • Skunk
  • Garbage
  • Manure
  • Urine
  • Fish
  • Food
  • Fuels
  • Chemicals
  • Crime Scenes

Hydrogen Sulfide Reduction, Mercaptans, Ammonia.

EM America provides clients with specifically targeted applications utilizing the power of EM Technology®. With that, we are able to dramatically reduce odors, such as ammonia and hydrogen sulfide at any point within the  wastewater collection and treatment system. With consistent and targeted applications of EM-1® Waste Treatment, it is possible to prevent the production of H2S in lift-stations and collection systems by the exclusion of the putrefactive pathogens and free radicals.

The areas of greatest odor complaint conditions include lift stations, areas of low flow, the head-works, anaerobic digesters and press plants. Properly timed and targeted applications of EM-1® Waste Treatment will remove odors within the system in these worse case scenarios.

Drops in H2S from 800ppm to 2ppm have been measured within minutes of applications.

EM-1® is used for odor control in a variety of industries including wastewater, solid wastes, composting, industrial cleaning, hazmat cleanup, and the like.

Cleaning with Effective Microorganisms

For hotel and home housekeeping, EM-1® applications will first reduce and eliminate odor in carpets, furniture, trash, etc. Second, it is also used to clean windows, mirrors, toilets, tubs, flooring, etc.

Benefits of EM-1®

  • In toilets and tubs EM-1® has an effect on salts that prevents them from binding to other substances, therefore, getting rid of the “ring”.
  • EM-1® will cut down the use of detergent in laundry, eliminate odor, clean laundry better, and help drainage.
  • In swamp coolers or humidifiers, EM-1® will keep unit clean, eliminate odors and freshen the air you breath.

EM-1® can be used in the following ways:

Dilution with water Purpose Rate Frequency
1:10 Odors & Tobacco Smoke Slightly Moist Daily or when needed

* For tougher applications, use a higher concentration of EM-1®.† If excess water from mop bucket is poured down drain, there should be no need for additional applications to the drains.

Dilution should be done as follows:
Example: 1 ounce EM-1® to 10 ounces water

Store EM-1® at room temperature (55 to 80 degrees F) and out of direct sun light. Chemicals such as bleach, ammonia, and anti-bacterial soap should be avoided before and after EM-1® use.

Pest control:
Spraying areas where pasts are a problem will prevent odor, which attracts flies and other vectors. Similarly, EM-1® will prevent putrefaction, which will, in time, eliminate the food source for ants, roaches, rats, and mice. These pests leave scent trails, through access point (crawl spaces, utility access both overhead, below and through walls) to return upon, and for others to follow. Periodically spraying these areas with EM-1® eliminates insect and rodent scent trails.

Available in 5 gallon, 55 gallon, and 1 gallon sizes ready-to-use (Activated EM-1®). 5 gallon pictured below.

Restaurants need Effective Microorganisms™. Grease and odors hover everywhere in the operation. Restaurant owners purchase various products for treating all these issues (soap, degreaser, bleach, drain cleaner, acids, enzymes, etc.). Using EM-1® for all these applications will take care of these problems and save the restaurant owner time & money.

commercial-kitchen-emi1With all the food, garbage, and water, restaurants are notorious for attracting pests. Therefore, cleanliness is extremely important. Also, restaurants care about keeping chemicals away from the foods they plan to prepare for their customers. What better way is there than to get rid of the chemicals and clean with all natural products?

The Grease Trap:
Extending the time between cleanouts of the trap and drains will save the restaurants several hundred dollars per cleanout. EM-1® will digest the majority of the grease and stabilize proteins (something no other product on the market can currently claim.) This will control odors and keep the trap from backing up.

Regular applications of Effective Microorganisms™ brand products (EM-1®) will keep the restaurant pest and grease free, leaving the restaurant owner with a secure feeling, knowing there will be no grease trap overflows or health department problems.

The Hood, Behind, and Underneath The Line:
There are a couple of easy ways to apply a solution of EM-1® to these areas during breakdown. One is to use a pump sprayer and spray in a fine mist each time you breakdown or cleaning. Another way is to use a spray bottle and spray the solution directly on the surface at the end of each shift. Within a short time, the grease will be eaten off the wall and you will only need to polish the surface. A Great Time Saver!

General Cleaning During Breakdown:

To increase the benefits of the EM-1® applications, it is recommended to use Effective Microorganisms™ (EM-1®) in place of any synthetic soaps, de-greasers, and cleaners. We also now have Earth Shine All-Purpose Cleaner: Commercial Concentrate for all-purpose cleaning throughout the restaurant. You can combine the two for added grease digestion. Simply mix them in your wash bucket during cleaning in equal amounts.

Using EM-1® during the nightly wash down (breakdown) on the line and the firewall behind is great for fire preventive. The EM-1® eats the grease on the walls, the stoves, and the hood and gets rid of the fire hazard by eating the grease.

Moping The Floor (Tile, Stone, and Wood):
Add a combination of water and EM-1® to the mop bucket. You won’t need any soap, bleach, or grease cutter any more. The floor will not have that haze of grease. This will be great because it will prevent the slick slipping hazard that is almost impossible to get rid of with normal cleaners.

Use a sprayer and spray a solution of water and EM-1® onto the carpet after each dining time. Since carpets harbor odors, this will help to stop the odor, build up of grease, and stop matting of the carpet fibers. This will leave the room smelling and looking fresh every day.

When steam cleaning the carpets, add a cup of EM-1® for each full reservoir of water.

Odor (Smoke, Food, Grease, etc):
Regular use of EM-1® inside the restaurant will stop odors in the sewer or septic lines that hover around the manholes that your walk by on their way into your restaurant.

Spraying the dining area (the front of the house) with a mixture of Effective Microorganisms™ (EM-1®) and water will keep grease down on the carpeted areas and eat any odors from dirt, spilled alcohol, and smoke.

All the mats should be hosed down with a solution of EM-1® during normal cleaning as well. This will not only keep odors from coming out of the mats, but will also eat the grease on the makes, keeping them from being so slippery.

EM-1® can be put into an evaporative cooler or in Smoke-Eater® filters to get rid of the smells in the air. EM-1® in air conditioner and “swamp cooler” keeps the components and filters clean and running efficiently. This can be done by using a simple siphon unit connected to a container of EM-1®.

Cleaning the bathrooms with an Effective Microorganisms™ (EM-1®) solution will get rid of all smells of urine and drain back gassing.

The recommended dilution rates for typical food service establishment and industry applications are as follows:

Dilution Rate Purpose Quantity Application
Odors & Tobacco Smoke Slightly Moist Daily
Dumpsters Wet
1: 10 Garbage Disposal
Kitchen Floor Drains 1-2 ounces per Drain Daily at closing
Floor Drains
Food Waste Container Final Rinse
1:20 Carpets & Mats Slightly Moist 1-2 times per week
Kitchen sinks,Dishwashers, and all non-food prep areas Appropriate Amount 1-2 times per week
Bathroom fixtures/floors Final Rinse/Mopping
1:50 Urinals 1-2 ounces per drain Daily at closing
Metal Stall Base* Wet Spray
1:1:100** Floors 1/4-3/4 cup per bucket **Hot water final mop

*Stops rusting of metal surfaces by eliminating free radicals and oxidation.

**{EM-1®: Vinegar: Hot Water} Each night use mild non-antibacterial soap and 5% acid white vinegar to eliminate the grease film on the floor. For tougher application use 1:1:50.

Pest Control
Spraying the shed areas, mats, and in the fry-o-lator drums will prevent odor, which attracts flies. Similarly, EM-1® will prevent putrefaction, which, in turn, eliminates the food source for ants, roaches, rats, and mice. These pests leave scent trails through access points (crawl spaces, utility access both overhead and below and through walls) to return upon and for other pests to follow. Periodically cleaning these areas with EM-1® will eliminate the insect’s scent trails. Reduction in insect and rodent populations will also decrease problems from birds and other predators in dumpsters.

em1logo75px (1)EM Technology® offers a unique approach to dealing with fats, oils, and grease. Instead of emulsifying them, as enzyme products do, EM-1® Microbial Inoculant will digest them, eliminating them from the system. During the natural fermentation process, over 50 different enzymes are produced by the microbes in EM-1®. Since there is no freeze drying or pasteurization of the EM-1®, all the enzymes are left in solution and continue to be produced by the live microbes in the culture. In regards to grease digestion, the most important of these enzymes are protease and lipase. Microbes use enzymes to accelerate the breakdown of various materials. This is one of the main reasons EM-1® Waste Treatment does such a great job at digesting grease. If you inoculate a system with only enzymes, you don’t necessarily have the microbes in place that can use them and finish the process.

This is evidenced by a reduction of BOD and COD, after application directly into grease traps, within the waste stream. EM-1® Waste Treatment lowers the cloud point of the FOGs within the trap, eliminating the formation of paraffin’s, thereby reducing gas pockets of H2S gas formed around putrefactive food particles.

EM-1® Waste Treatment improves efficiency of the treatment plant skimmer tanks to capture a greater amount of grease.

Biological polishing of the sewer pipes occurs as the EM-1® Waste Treatment is seeded throughout the collection system, thus reducing clogging and crowning from saponifiable or non-saponifiable grease.

Prevention of Rust
em1logo75px (1)On of the most damaging effects on equipment is rusting. Rust is an oxidation reaction. Moisture on metal is not a good thing when there are oxidizing agents around. Almost any cleaner used today is an oxidizer. Ammonia and bleach will oxidize metals, causing rusted equipment, thereby increasing operations costs over time.

Antioxidants reverse oxidation (that is what the “anti” means). Antioxidants are chelated minerals and vitamins. EM-1® is fermented with cane molasses. Cane molasses have roughly 40 different trace minerals. The microbes in EM-1® will synthesize various bio-available vitamin compounds (including B complex and Vitamin A) and enzymes during the fermentation process. Therefore, EM-1® Waste Treatment is known to reverse putrefaction and oxidation through secreted by-products, namely, antioxidants. Antioxidants help with pH balance and are known for preventing and even reversing corrosion.

Prevention of Crowning

The pH balance also contributes to prevention of H2S combining with water vapor and forming H2SO4, the main cause of crowning in sewer lines. Thiobacillus bacteria are the same bacteria that are used in strip mining to produce the acid wash. These bacteria are found everywhere on earth, but they need a certain pH, water, and sulfur to form sulfuric acid. The wastewater vapors in sewer lines provide the perfect environment for sulfuric acid production.*

The microbes in EM-1® not only release O2 during their respiration which raises the pH, they also ingest a tremendous amount of sulfur, therefore removing it from the waste stream.*

Rising corrosive gases in lift stations can be dealt with through several types of applications and targeted activation with EM-1® Waste Treatment, thereby preventing corrosion from outset. With repeated applications of EM-1® Waste Treatment to lift-station’s pumps, housing, and concrete, corrosion and rusting can actually be reversed.

In wastewater, antioxidants have a scavenging effect in the treatment system, pulling compounds out of suspension by combining with salts, thus causing a crystallization formation into a benign salt. By preventing various salts and mineral formation build up, the pipes will be polished without the need for mechanical cleaning. This all equals saving the municipality and the taxpayers money.
