Septic Systems
Standard Anaerobic Septic Systems for Single Family households:
There has been much debate in the professional arena about the use of inoculants in septic systems. While most products contain large amounts of fillers and very little active bacteria, some products are great...under certain conditions. As more and more of us continue to use antibiotic soaps, and increase the use of bleach and other disinfectants, and increase the intake of pharmaceuticals, the lifeblood of an onsite treatment system, the microbes, start to die. As many professionals have stated in professional journals, "The septic tank is dead. The leaching field is dead and plugged. The only way to revive it is to inoculate it with a strong, live culture of microbes."
EM-1® Waste Treatment for septic systems provides for a marked improvement to off-setting the typical imbalance caused by over loading, harsh cleaners/detergents, antibiotic soaps, drain cleaners and a wide variety of other materials that make their way into the household on-site waste disposal system.
Benefits:
Regular monthly applications recharge the system with beneficial microbes which promote:
- A more complete breakdown of organic matter (Lowers BOD & density of Sludge)
- Reduction of Odors due to pathogens/putrefaction (H2S Hydrogen Sulfide Gas)
- Reduction of a wide variety of microbes causing waterborne diseases (Works by competitive exclusion)
- Reduction in the amount of suspended solids bypassed into the leach field (TSS-Total Suspended Solids)
- Enhanced stabilization of complex proteins (Average amount of protein in fecal matter 85% & urine 35%)
Regular monthly applications in home sewer lines offer the following benefits:
- Reduces grease/fats crowning in the sewer lines (saponifiable and non-saponifiable)
- Reduces air vent clogging (fats/grease and mold growth)
- Reduces backup due to organic matter build up in lines ( Microorganisms consume organic matter)
- Improves grease trap functionality while reducing odors (Treats saponifiable and non-saponifiable plus elimination of paraffin formation)
- Reduces sewer gases generation (H2S-Hydrogen Sulfide Gas - "rotten egg smell")
Impact applications by applying directly into the leach field:
- Reduces clogged leach field due to grease/fats buildup
- Reduces typical over growth of zuglea mass in the leach field
- Improves porosity of the leach field gravel/soils
- Enhances soil's natural bacterial action ( decomposition)
We also have conducted a series of in-field tests with our new water soluble bokashi packets. These packets have no dyes or scents and are intended for household systems. These packets can be used for portable toilets and vault toilets to control mounding and odors. RVs, campers, boats, and buses could benefit from using them as well. One 2 ounce packet will treat one portable toilet for one week, or one packet can be flushed down a domestic toilet per month to maintain a healthy septic system.

Method of Application:
- The best results are achieved when EM-1® Waste Treatment is applied immediately after septic tank has been pumped clean. (This is desirable but not required.)
- When treating drains (shower/sink/floor), toilets, and pea traps, mix the EM-1® Waste Treatment with warm water (98° to 110°F) at 1:5 ratio. Apply when drains will not be used for 8 or more hours, such as over night or during the day when no one will be home using the system.
- For grease trap applications mix the EM-1® Waste Treatment and/or Super "C" ceramics with warm water (98° to 110°F) at 1:5. Then divide the solution and put half through the kitchen drain and half directly into the top section of the grease trap.
- When applying directly into leach field (via inspection port) or into the septic tank (via a toilet) mix the EM-1® Waste Treatment and/or Super "C" ceramics with warm water (98° to 110°F) at 1:10 ratio.
Stuck drain or slow flowing drain:
Pour 1/4 cup EM-1® and 1/4 cup molasses into drain when you know the drain will not be used for at least 8 hours. Let sit and start to ferment. The activation process will start to loosen the material in the drain.
For a stubborn drain, pack the drain with baking soda and pour vinegar until the drain clears. Flush with water. Follow up with regular applications of EM-1® once or twice per week as you clean the sink. This will keep the microbes in the drain and help to keep the drain clean and flowing properly.

Wastewater Treatment

EM America provides clients with specifically targeted applications of EM Technology® that are able to dramatically reduce odors caused by putrefied wastes. The picture on the right shows the walls of a lift station that once were black and now look like new cement. This dramatic change was achieved simply through the application of EM-1® Waste Treatment. This effect happens throughout the entire collection system when EM Technology® is properly applied in the collection system. Timing, flow rates, system design, and management are all considered in developing an application program for a wastewater treatment plant and collection system (sewer)....
READMORECommercial Composting

Using EM Technology® (EM-1® Waste Treatment) can help reduce composting turning costs by as much as 80% and prevent anaerobic, odor-causing decay. The key to efficient composting is to have healthy decomposition constantly occurring throughout the pile. In all conditions, including low oxygen and anaerobic environments, EM-1® Waste Treatment facilitates healthy decomposition and increased production of stable organic matter particles (humus). Feed stocks treated with EM-1® Waste Treatment quickly develop structure and a more fluffy texture allowing oxygen to penetrate into the pile. Anaerobic pockets become aerated and the overall quality of the product is improved while reducing management...
READMORELandfill and Solid Waste Management

EM Technology® has been used around the world in the treatment of solid waste landfills. The motto of "acting locally" can be taken quite literally if we were all to incorporate the use of Effective Microorganisms™ at home by treating all of our food and green wastes "locally". Solid wastes are inevitable in today's society. How we manage the wastes is really the problem, not having them. Throwing items that have some usable value is not management, but waste. Incineration of wastes leads to other problems with air pollution and also relies heavily on fuels to produce high heat...

Inoculating Compost The following application recommendation are guidelines to producing high quality compost with less intensive management. Contact EM America for customer EM-1® Waste Treatment composting programs that will meet your goals. Procedures: Apply EM-1® Waste Treatment as soon as the material is consolidated (or windrowed) and preferably before the material has become thermophillic (temperatures above 120 degrees F). These recommended rates of EM-1® Waste Treatment application are guidelines and may need to be adjusted for site-specific conditions and unique feedstocks. Activated EM-1® Waste Treatment should be used for all applications due to cost savings. Consult with EM America...
READMOREBioremediation

Bioremediation is the process of biologically breaking down some type of contaminant, usually with some type of synthetic chemical, through the use of beneficial microorganisms. Depending on what has actually contaminated the area, a specific formula will be designed and inoculations will begin. Some methods involve complete removal of contaminated soil and incinerating it at very high temperatures to cook off the contaminant(s). Another method of remediating soils is to use plants known to uptake specific nutrients or metals from soils. This method is known as phyto-remediation. Once the plant has removed the contaminant from the soil it is...
